Ammeter Not Working

I just installed a model D85-2042A AC 100-300 volt 100 amp dual display meter. The voltage reads correct but the amps read 00.0 under load. I had to extend the wires on the core transformer to reach the meter and used 14awg wire. Does the wire size matter? Coukd that be the problem?

Update…I changed the extension wire to 18awg and the ammeter works fine…
