I have the following 2 of your products, the 50A and 20A volt/ammeter LED panels:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01M9CJYQJ/
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01M7R7JPJ/While experimenting briefly, I found that I could make either meter work just as a voltmeter by simply connecting to a battery using only the COM(-) and the V(+) connections (using only 2 wires). Is there any harm in doing this? The 50A meter worked this way without using the 50A external shunt.
Thanks!
Hello Kris,
Thanks for writing in.
If the meter is just used as voltmeter, you can hook it up like that.
But for measuring current, no matter how large the current is, the 50A meter must be connected wtih shunt, otherwise, the meter will burn out.

Another question regarding the 50 amp meter with shunt:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01M9CJYQJ/
My RV’s DC current from the RV battery to the 12v fusebox can only be measured from the positive lead. I confirmed this using a clamp ammeter. The negative lead shows 0.0 amps.
What would happen if I connected the positive lead of the RV battery to the main (amps/current) connections of the shunt instead of the negative, and connected the V+ to the positive lead of the battery as well? If I cannot do this, could I use a separate 12v power source to power the LED panel?
Thanks again
